Human error still a major factor in data breaches

When organization leaders think about data breaches, their minds may first turn to cybercrime. Hackers and malware certainly pose a threat to enterprises of all sizes and in all industries, but that doesn't mean these are the only things putting companies at risk. In many cases, an even bigger risk factor is located much closer to home. Employees are often at the root of data security issues, and firms must start taking precautions to safeguard their systems and data against internal forces.

Mistakes and negligence
While many employee-generated data breaches are the result of simple mistakes, there are others that are much more preventable. Dark Reading reported that according to one study by Lieberman Software Corporation, 80 percent of IT security professionals think other staff members purposefully ignore rules designed to protect data. Additionally, more than half of these IT experts believed that even if executive management were to set guidelines, corporate users would still not follow them. 

"These figures highlight the fact that most end users are still not taking IT security seriously and are unnecessarily putting corporate data - and potentially customer information - at risk," said Philip Lieberman, CEO of Lieberman Software. "And these behaviors are continuing even after it has been proven that human error is the leading cause of data breaches."

Lieberman suggested that better training may be one way to enhance security in many organizations. If end users understand why they must avoid unsafe behavior and what they can do to help, they may be more likely to put in the necessary amount of effort.

According to SC Magazine, it is critical for firms to take a few steps toward heightened security. Leaders should start by identifying the most pressing issues that need to be addressed, including local or industry compliance regulations. Then, the business can begin designing and deploying policies that take these considerations into account. The source noted that it's also important to make sure to secure content based on its level of classification so that the most sensitive materials are kept the safest. 

The news provider emphasized that it's critical for enterprises to give their employees means of collaboration that are secure, especially when processes involve accessing vulnerable records. This way, staff can work at full efficiency at all times.
